Teaching business English: The use of case studies

Teaching ESP in general and Business English in particular seems to have received less atten- tion than the training of skills and exam preparation has. Instructors of the courses themselves often waver between teaching the mere language and teaching the content of the specific subject matter, which most of the time are intertwined. The question is how to efficiently and effectively help students understand the key concepts of the subject area and then use the language appropriately. The use of case studies is brought into discussion as one solution to the problem. An overview of the definition and types of case will be provided. Then major benefits and challenges of the approach will be identified. Finally, the presenter will suggest some practical tips for using cases in the Business English classroom through a sample project that she has been using for her students at university.
