Current developments in english for academic purposes

John Lowe

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) entails training students, usually in a higher education setting, to use language appropriate for study. An EAP program focuses instruction on skills required to perform in an English-speaking academic setting across core subject areas generally encountered in a college/university. EAP is goal directed, and students need to learn English in order to succeed in their academic careers. EAP is becoming more widespread across Asia, as the teaching of General English does not adequately prepare students for academic and vocational study. This presentation will look at the implications for teachers in Vietnam in the teaching of EAP,  and will address some of the key issues in EAP, such as needs analysis. Using pragmatic and cutting-edge materials, the presenter will not only provide a clear overview of EAP but will also demonstrate ways of improving learning outcomes in the EAP classroom.
