High stakes language testing requires assessments that offer the highest levels of accuracy and objectivity. Technology now allows for assessments to be delivered and scored in ways which provide greater accuracy and objectivity than ever before. Automated scoring and innovative integrated skill item types are two features of the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - a fully automated, four-skill English proficiency test for high-stakes purposes. Automated scoring also has enabled a quick score turnaround of within five business days, in contrast with a traditional timeframe of 2-6 weeks. Taken together, PTE Academic is redefining the landscape of English assessment. In addition to the enhanced efficiency, research studies have also found that the test is very highly reliable (0.97 at the Overall score level). This session will explore how automated scoring is used in PTE Academic to assess both receptive and productive language skills and how computer-based test delivery supports a robust and reliable integrated skill assessment.
