Engaging with Error Correction: A Framework for Productive Activities
An error or a mistake? Do you know the difference
between the two? If you do, which one would you correct and how? This
presentation and workshop will attempt to answer the questions above and
provide a useful step by step guide when dealing with, and using errors and
mistakes. At the end of the session, I hope you will have ideas to help you
teach more effectively and in turn for your students to learn more efficiently.
We will start by briefly investigating the difference
between errors and mistakes and also look at differences in attitudes to error.
We will discuss some of the theory around error correction and second language
acquisition before exploring common Vietnamese errors and looking at techniques
for correcting these.
We will be introduced to ways of correction both ‘on
the spot’ and ‘delayed’ and there will be an opportunity to practice correcting
each other. Participants will be also be introduced to a marking code useful
for correcting written errors.
Teachers will take away useful techniques and feel
more comfortable when it comes to correcting their students.
