EXPLORING VALUES
As our memories often remind us, the teenage years are a time of tremendous
biological and emotional changes. This transformation from child to adult
encompasses many individual changes such as behaviour becoming riskier, and
self-esteem starting to diminish. While our main responsibility will always be
to teach the English language, this workshop will also argue that as educators
we must never forget to consider the student as a whole. In an ever-smaller
world, the need to interact with multiple mindsets on a regular basis continues
to grow and thus we should consider it a duty to include values education as an
integral part of our curriculum. This workshop will look at what values are and
how teachers can add values activities into their secondary classrooms, with
the idea that, as according to Dr. Richard Carmona, “The values and lessons
that you teach [teenagers] will shape the adults that they become.”
