Getting young learners to speak

Jonee de Leon

Speaking in class can be a daunting prospect for Young Learners in their native language, and is even more so in English. Students need confidence in using the necessary language, and they also need a reason to speak. Activities should be motivating, fun and create a desire to communicate using the target language. Achieving this can be difficult at first, but, after they have been set up once, the activities can have a momentum of their own. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn and try various classroom tasks designed to encourage Young Learners (YLs) to speak during class time, and gain in confidence in using language, with a view to improving their performance in the Cambridge ESOL YLE Exams for Starters, Movers and Flyers. The workshop will use materials from the DELTA YLE and DELTA Practice and Pass series, but the activities can be used with any course book, any level and almost any age group. Wherever possible, the presenter has chosen activities that require little or no preparation.
