Technology and elt: Current issues and opportunities

David Kaye

As the use of technological tools by teachers both inside and outside the classroom grows, with an increased demand being placed on publishers to produce a wider range of technology components, the time is right to pause and ask two important questions. First, has technology lived up to its promise to make our lives, as teachers, easier? And second, is technology helping to create classroom engagement or are we seeing a growing disparity between our learners’ highly-stimulating, tech-rich home lives, and the relative paucity of classroom stimulus. In answering these questions this talk will: • Give an overview of recent technological developments in ELT • Examine the tools available to us today, and how they are shaping our teaching - for better or worse • Discuss ways we can harness technology in the future to create more engaging classes
