Developing life skills in asian classrooms

Jack Hsiao

If we want our learners to succeed in the modern world we may need to equip them with more than just traditional language knowledge and skills (Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking). There is a growing awareness that students also need a broader range of transfer- able "Life Skills" including self-awareness, critical and creative thinking as well as collaborative skills. This session will focus on key competencies and life skills that we can begin to develop with our learners, and we will look at ways in which life skills can be integrated into our daily classroom practice. Examples will be taken from a range of Macmillan courses that incorporate life skills devel- opment and participants will leave the session with practical and interesting ideas that will help them empower their students to acquire the life skills they need to succeed as lifelong learners.
