Bridges to Business: Projects and Case Studies

Many university students are ill prepared for the world of work particularly in terms of the language skills they will need to operate in the increasingly competitive global marketplace. This session will look at practical ways in which teachers can help their students bridge the gap between the language classroom and the world of work by using business projects, tasks and case studies. A variety of tasks suitable for learners at different levels will be demonstrated beginning with simple projects that help learners prepare for using English in the workplace to challenging case studies that involve the use of both linguistic and thinking skills for higher level students. The session will also look at criteria that teachers can use to select tasks suitable for their learners and ideas for successfully implementing them in their classrooms.
