Making Teaching English More Child-Friendly: Story Telling

Children learn the second or foreign language in a way quite different from the way they learn their mother tongue. They don’t have any clear reason for their learning and still have to manage their own behavior while they need to pick up language chunks in a very meaningful context with direct experience and activities for later creative use of the language. So with children, the teacher has to motivate them so they are willing to try and use the new language. The current trend of teaching English to children in Ho Chi Minh City seems to favor games and songs and neglect story telling while the latter is not less effective. If the teachers are well-equipped with certain skills and techniques, they will be more confident and more willing to use story telling as part of their effort to make the language classroom more child-friendly.
