An introduction to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL)

Good teachers across all disciplines, from ESL to Film Studies, raise questions about what causes students to learn or not learn. We talk to each other, read the literature, and advance classroom practices that we believe will lead to deeper learning. The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning integrates classroom practice with pedagogical research, encourages good teachers to transform belief about teaching and learning into evidence; SoTL motivates us to move beyond casual observations and conversations to systematic, purposeful, and shared research. Focused on intentional learning activities and outcomes, SoTL shares results through presentations and publications. In this session we will define SoTL, highlight its fundamental principles, goals, and methods, illustrated by practical examples.
