Teaching pronunciation to vietnamese students: which aspects should we focus on and what are some effective techniques?

Regarding standardization and practices in ELT, individuals have various attitudes concerning how to teach pronunciation.While some believe that students should be taught to sound like native speakers, others argue that, with the globalization of English, it is more important that they are intelligible. In this workshop, participants will consider some of the common English pronunciation problems Vietnamese learners have, including stress, intonation, and individual sounds. The possible effects of these mistakes on various listeners will be considered to evaluate their relative significance; and a number of techniques for teaching and correcting pronunciation will be presented. Participants will have the opportunity to share their opinions on the gravity of different types of phonological errors, and will be given time to practice some of the teaching techniques.
